Week 39 – Boom

Week 37 Challenge: Design a Youtube background!

This challenge is very open, you can be as creative as you want, but there’s a couple of things you need to think of.

The size is 1500px*1200px using this template [1] , however not all users will be able to see the full width. So you cannot use the full width for important aspects of your design, since many users will not see it.

Examples of good backgrounds:

Go look for some yourself too! Keep in mind many people make these backgrounds for fun, so we should step up a notch and make something that works.

Boom-01-01

I decided to make a background for a channel that focuses on videos of explosions. It also continues to incorporate the social media buttons I put together in Week 30.

Week 38 – Dutch 811

Task

Tomorrow, 30th of April is Queensday in Holland. It’s the day we (officially) celebrate the birth of Queen Juliana (our former queen). This Queensday is special because Beatrix, our current Queen will resign and we will have a new King – Willem Alexander. To celebrate, we will design a new website for the Dutch royal family.

Requirements: The main colour HAS to be bright orange, it’s a tradition that mustn’t be broken. The website should display information regarding the current activities of the Royal family (just make something up if you want).

This is the current royal website[1] , but you can do better of course.

First I vectored and recolored the seal which took a while so I stopped there:

Landing Page

I added a example page to show what it would look like in action:

News Page

After some berating from colleagues I made some edits:

News Page 2-01

My goal was to create a more simple blogroll style site that would make it easier to incorporate web 2.0 functionality while maintaining a formal look. Thoughts, comments and critiques are always welcome.

52 Weeks of Design – Week 33

Task

his week we’ll be diving further in web/interface design. Your challenge is to create an interface for a music player.

This can be Windows Media Player, iTunes, an Android Music Player app, a MP3-Player interface.. basically anything that plays music and has an interface.. mkay?

Here is a list of resources/inspiration:

Android MP3 Interface

I decided to take a shot a making an app for one of my favorite social music sites, This is My Jam, where people post the song their favorite song of the day/week/moment. After friending enough people you can get a decently varied, ever changing playlist going, which is where the app comes in.  My main goal was to retain the feel of the site while stripping the funtionality down to just your playlist and the social things you can do while listening to that playlist.

this is my jam-01

Thanks for taking a look,

Blake

52 Weeks of Design – Week 30

Task

This week we will be designing a set of share buttons for sites like Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, Google plus, Pinterest and/or any others you wish to create.

The buttons have to have something in common.. the same shape, color set or any other general aesthetics. Go wild!

Clean-01-01

I wanted something simple that fits in the emerging flat web trend, but still had layers and looked tactile.

P.S. Free Shipping on art prints this week

I Am Not A Programmer

But I’ll be damned if I am going to try to live in the internet era while illiterate.  Over the last two days I jumped back in to my attempt at creating a portfolio site of myself from scratch.  As much as I live the usability of this template, I’m beginning to feel restricted by it.  The goal is to have a site that shows my work, is my work, and expresses my attitude and talent through its functionality.

I started with a simple landing page with a navigation bar, starting from scratch rather than a template so I understood the importance of every line I was writing.  Currently the links don’t go anywhere but I’m really happy with it as a start and as an exercise in some structural css that doesn’t look like something from 1997.  I’m also pretty proud of myself for figuring out the @font face css to use a nonstandard font for my links without resorting to .png files.  To keep it in the 21 century my next plan is to make the functional template for the site.  I’ve mocked it up here and have a really good idea of how I want it to work.

I’m not sure how possible it is but it will certainly be a learning experience.  Being that I’m stumbling through the dark on this one, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Other News

There is still one week of voting left on my scott pilgrim shirt.  If you haven’t voted please do, if you have please tell your friends!

I’m not sure how regularly I’m going to be updating my blog here in the next week or so.  I might be moving up to Mammoth as early as next week so between that and getting settled in to this internship I’m probably going to have to put my personal stuff on the back burner.  Thanks to all the readers, hope to see you again soon.
